Justice Eva Guzman becomes first Latina to win statewide election in Texas
Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman became the first Latina to win election to a statewide office in Texas, securing a full six-year term on the state’s highest civil court. Guzman earned over 60% of the vote on Tuesday night, nearly 3 million votes – believed to be the most votes ever cast for a Hispanic in Texas history.
“What a privilege it has been to serve by appointment on the Supreme Court of Texas. And what an honor it is to answer the call of the people of Texas to continue my important work on our state’s highest civil court,” said Justice Guzman.
“I am very grateful to the citizens of Texas for the confidence they have shown in me and their commitment to a Supreme Court that respects the rule of law, protects the Constitution and dispenses justice fairly and without bias” said Guzman. “Tonight, we celebrate more than a victory at the polls. We celebrate a happy and historic moment for Texas.”
“When the citizens of the Texas elected me to the Texas Supreme Court, I became the first Latina in Texas history to win a statewide election. What a journey! Tonight, we celebrate the many Hispanic men and women who blazed the trails that made that journey possible. Even before the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Latinos and Latinas were playing important roles in shaping the Texas we all cherish today. I am honored to continue this rich tradition. And I am proud to stand with all Texans as we celebrate this exciting and historic moment,” Guzman concluded.
